Mark Popek talks about the developing offensive line, while coach Larry Scott is excited about his group of running backs.

  • I thought he looked very good last week, but lots of articles and coaches quotes on running backs and absolutely no mention of the junior Bradley Battles. Writing seems to be on the wall with him despite his final best efforts this spring. Willie Davis is being mentioned ahead of him, in fact he's the only running back not mentioned.

Love what Lamar is doing, best back on the outside. If he can gain some weight and add an inside game to his running, he will keep defenses honest from leaning outside and should gain the No 2 carries over Marcus Shaw. Also encouraging Shaw is putting it together, our best combo of speed and power.

Again, why did we sign Michael Pierre if he's not making it to fall and these guys will be entenched by then?

Bringing in a RB was a necessity, for whatever reason USF missed on several and jumped on Pierre late. But the reason is simple, Darrell Scott leaves 800 yards of offense to be replaced. Only Murray can be counted on. Sure, you can say Shaw has potential, but it's clear the staff doesn't trust him on or off the field right now. He has to earn that trust back. In the meantime USF has to hedge their risk by bringing in a JUCO back incase Murray goes down with an injury.

Lamar is a good threat, but right now that's all he is. He's never going to be an everydown back. He's not able to put on enough weight for that. He's been at USF for 3 years and hasn't been able to add weight, it's not going to happen all of a sudden, prior to his senior year.

Bringing in Pierre was a necessity, not a luxury.

Great insight on the running back situation Josh.
