  • Wow. 2 big time national commits to basketball this week. That has to be a first. That new facility is already paying dividends.

  • Huge recommit. I now have hope for the 2012 season. How many spots are left to fill? 3?

I believe there are still two open spots left.

  • Very good news. We needed him here.

  • Too bad they can't play this season

  • Corey,

Did you get a chance to talk to Waverly Austin and the junior college small forward that chose us over Memphis?

Stan committing 2 of his 4 schollies is a pretty big deal.

Would like to hear their thoughts on USF, and maybe get a feel which players they and USF are actively recruiting to fill the final 2 spots.

Curious to see if Waverly really had offers from Kansas and UNC, the other from Memphis. How would you and 247 rate these pickups?

To me the small forward (Masu is his name?) is a head scratcher. He only has 2 left, and he most likely will sit his entire junior year behind better upperclassmen at the teams most stacked positions SG/SF in Victor Rudd, Jawanza Poland, Martino Brock, and Shuan Noriega. Not to mention Toralyn Fitzpatrick who is a natural small forward at 6'7 with range. Just didn't seem like an efficient use of the scholarship when we will only have 2 big men in Jordan and Waverly on the team taller than 6'8. We really need to close with 2 center power forward types to back up or compete for a starting spot with those 2.

By all accounts these were two nationally recruited players. That's a clear upgrade over anything USF has on the roster right now other than maybe Gilchrist. Musa is a shooting guard not a small forward. Heath badly needs a scorer from the perimeter, which is what Musa supposedly bring to the team.. Musa's offer to Memphis is supposed to be legit. Another plus is that he's physically mature. He's already 23 years old. Here's what one of his coaches had to say about Musa.

"He's an exceptional shooter, plays extremely hard, inside and out," said David Dennis, GPC's associate head coach. "He's one of the better scorers you'll see. Not only can he score, he's a shooter as well, a rare combination. You may have guys that shoot the ball well, or score with the ball. He does both very well. Excellent mid-range game. He can post up, put it on the floor and get by guys on the bounce. He's as complete as you want to be as an offensive player.

As for Waverly sounds like other than UNC his offers were legit. I read it was confirmed that he did have offers from Miami, Georgetown, Cincy, Baylor, Maryland, Missouri. Also, Austin made it sound like Kansas did offer and also that UF was beginning to recuit him hard. Got to hand it to Stan he did a good job getting Austin to recommit. Austin had a lot of good things to say about his relationship with the staff and how awesome he said the facilities are. He said he's been to most of the schools that offered him and that USF's was the best.

If Heath can survive this season he may have a team that's capable of just making the tournament. The team should look something like this. Have to wait and see how they pan out, but it looks good on paper.

    PG - Blake Nash
    SG - Musa Abdul-Aleem
    SF - Victor Rudd
    PF - Toarlyn Fitzpatrick
    C - Waverly Austin

    BradentonBull,

Love your passion for hoops, and having a lot of scorers is a great problem that we have not had in a long time. We had no go to guy last year, and Jones was it the year before.

I am getting my hopes up for that 2012 team. But there will have to some fine massaging of egos if that is the starting lineup because Poland is set up to be a 2 year starter going into his senior year then, to be beat out by Masu will be hard to swallow. Also Brock was the go to guy at a lesser school South Alabama, but nevertheless was their best player with the ball in his hands. I suspect if Noriega is unable to become a complete player, he will be the odd man out when Masu arrives out of the 5 of them. Which will be hard for a senior. He might go the way of Burwell after this year if he doesn't develop his defense.

Maybe they can play a small ball lineup with rudd at power forward when the 7'3 Jordan is in to make up for it defensively.

But honestly I have no idea what Heath is going to do this year with only one player over 6'7 in Augustus Gilchrist. Anderson and Fitzpatrick at 6'7 each, and they are going to be forced to play the center and forward spots with no true centers. Gus plays like a small forward. We could get slammed in the paint though we have solid perimeter players this year.

Anybody hear how our new point guards are doing, Blake Nash and Anthony Collins? Is the battle for starting point a quality one between Nash and Dority?
